Where to stay in Bala

For a small town, Bala has a good spread of places to stay, from historic inns on the High Street to campsites by the lake. It gets busy in the summer holidays and on big event weekends, so book early if your dates are fixed. Hotels and inns

• Palé Hall, Llandderfel: a five-star Victorian country house hotel a few miles east of Bala, with 22 rooms and suites, the Henry Robertson Dining Room and extensive gardens and woodland. Read our Palé Hall feature.
• The White Lion Royal Hotel, High Street: built in 1752 and still at the heart of the town, with en-suite rooms (breakfast included), a bar with an open fire and a beer garden.
• Plas Coch Hotel, High Street: a town-centre hotel with a bright lounge, a separate public bar and a restaurant that is popular with locals.
• The Bryntirion Inn, Llandderfel: a centuries-old village inn on the Palé estate, reopened in late 2024 after a major refurbishment, with six bedrooms named after the peaks of Eryri. It was named among The Guardian’s top 30 UK inns in 2025.

Hostel

• Bala Backpackers, Tegid Street: a value hostel in refurbished 19th-century buildings on a quiet chapel square, a couple of hundred metres from the lake. Shared and twin rooms, a guest kitchen and dining area; bring your own linen or a sleeping sack, or hire one.

Camping, touring and glamping

• Penybont Touring and Camping Park, Llangynog Road: a landscaped five-star family park about ten minutes’ walk from the town centre, with tent and hardstanding pitches, glamping tents and shepherd’s huts with hot tubs. Usually open from March into the autumn.
• Glanllyn Lakeside Caravan and Camping Park: on the southern shore about 3 miles from Bala on the A494 towards Dolgellau, with its own small beach for launching kayaks and windsurfers (a lake permit is needed). Usually open Easter to mid-October.

Self-catering

There are holiday cottages, barn conversions and lodges in the villages around the lake, such as Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer (Llangower), Llanycil, Llandderfel and Frongoch, which suit families and walking groups.
